Instrumentation and measurement
Small parts with fine dimensions and clean surfaces, usually in stainless steel or brass. The sector where measurement uncertainty stops being a formality and becomes a real share of the tolerance band.
Parts typical of this sector
Small parts with fine dimensions and clean surfaces, often in stainless steel or brass. Here dimensional stability matters more than strength: the material, its condition after machining and the temperature at which it is measured change the result more than the tool does.
Criteria that govern the quotation
At tolerances of a few tenths of a micron the measurement uncertainty consumes part of the band, and what is left to the process is less than the drawing states. The measuring method is therefore agreed together with the tolerance, not afterwards. The second criterion is dimensional stability: small stainless parts distort under clamping force and spring back on release, which is why the final dimensions are machined last, in a low-force set-up. The reference temperature for dimensional acceptance is stated at quotation.
Usual materials
The material groups most frequently found in this sector’s parts. What governs remains the requirement on the drawing, not the sector classification.
Usual processes
The processes this sector’s parts usually pass through.
Documentation usually required
Usual: a dimensional report with the measuring method stated, and a material certificate. For fine dimensions, the instrument is agreed in advance.
