Heavy equipment
Large parts, usually in quenched-and-tempered steel, with a large allowance to remove at roughing. The first condition is not the tolerance but whether the part fits the machine travels; the second, dimensional stability once the stresses are released.
Parts typical of this sector
Large parts, often in quenched-and-tempered steel, with a heavy roughing allowance. Machine travels and fixturing stiffness decide, and stress relief of the sawn blank, ahead of machining, is not optional: otherwise the stresses released in roughing move the part before finishing.
Criteria that govern the quotation
Machine travels and permissible table load decide feasibility before any dimension does; the overall size and the mass are supplied together with the drawing. The second criterion is the behaviour of the material: a large allowance removed quickly releases the rolling stresses, and the part moves after roughing. Stress relieving is therefore done on the sawn blank, before machining, and the functional dimensions are cut after it. A large part finished without stress relieving can measure good in the workshop and still be rejected at the customer.
Usual materials
The material groups most frequently found in this sector’s parts. What governs remains the requirement on the drawing, not the sector classification.
Usual processes
The processes this sector’s parts usually pass through.
Documentation usually required
Usual: material certificate and a dimensional report on the functional dimensions, taken after stress relieving.
